Making the Leap in Kensal Green runs tailored programmes to help socio-economically disadvantaged young people from low income families have access to career opportunities. The organisation seeks to raise young people’s aspirations and includes developing the key soft skills vital for life and the world of work such as confidence, communication skills, organisational skills, motivation and time keeping. It also offers its Fellows ongoing coaching for as long as they need, as well as holistic support such as counselling, to ensure that they are fully equipped for their next step.
Spitalfields Music in Tower Hamlets provides pupils with severe language and communication difficulties the opportunity to develop their self-esteem, communication skills and confidence to express themselves through music.
JusB in Bromley, Kent, helps hard-to-reach young people in hardship, need or distress. The organisation aims to help young people ‘Just Be’ themselves, whatever problems they may start with, and ‘Just Become’ all that they can be. Community volunteers, specialist staff and young people are brought together to participate in projects that divert young people from unproductive activities to make the most of their potential.
King Henry’s Walk Garden in Islington runs literacy projects on the topic of bees for primary schools in the local area. It also included sessions for children with Special Education Needs (SEN). The project has enabled nearly 1700 pupils over the last four years to learn about bees and produce wonderful work to demonstrate their learning.
Spitalfields City Farm in Tower Hamlets which offers a wide variety of social and educational activities in gardening and animal husbandry for the local community. This includes volunteers, families, people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds as well as those with special needs, schools and community groups. The farm aims to make a positive change by ensuring that everyone has the chance to get involved.
The Bee Farmers’ Association and Rowse Honey Apprenticeship Scheme
The Wax Chandlers’ Company is also a major player in the Livery Companies Apprenticeship Scheme. We have teamed up with the Bee Farmers Association, DEFRA, Rowse Honey and other commercial sponsors B J Sherriff and BeeGood to provide the Wax Chandlers’ Diploma in Excellence in Bee Farming.
